Anthropic opens Claude Duet research previewAnthropic said on Oct. 21 that Claude Duet, an app in which Claude flags items needing attention, completes assigned tasks and checks with the user before acting on their behalf, is in an early research preview. Anthropic said it is included in Pro and Max plans, starts with US users only, and is available through a waitlist on iOS, Android and claude.ai.
Google Cloud and NVIDIA announce A5X Vera Rubin instancesNVIDIA said on Oct. 21 that general availability of Google Cloud's A5X instances on NVIDIA Vera Rubin infrastructure is coming next month. NVIDIA said Google Cloud plans to scale the infrastructure to "as many as 960,000 Rubin GPUs across multiple sites."
Flapping Airplanes raises $1 billion Series ATechCrunch reported on Oct. 21 that AI lab Flapping Airplanes, founded by Aidan Smith, Asher Spector and Ben Spector, raised a $1 billion Series A co-led by Index and Lux, with Nvidia among other investors. TechCrunch cited Bloomberg as reporting a $6 billion valuation.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard navy says seven tankers damaged in Strait of HormuzThe AP reported that Iranian state TV, quoting a statement from the Revolutionary Guard's navy, said seven oil tankers were damaged in the Strait of Hormuz overnight into Thursday, either "struck by attacks or hit naval mines." RFE/RL reported the IRGC Navy said "seven vessels had been hit in the Persian Gulf region" and that the claims had not been independently verified. The AP said the report gave no details on casualties or the tankers' flags.
CSX reports third-quarter revenue of $4.02 billionCSX said on Oct. 21 that third-quarter revenue totaled $4.02 billion, up 12% year over year, with net earnings of $1.05 billion, or $0.57 per diluted share. CSX reported operating income of $1.57 billion.
